As the date for scheduled mediation approached, the insurance company agreed to settle the claim for an additional $750,000, bringing the total amount of the case to $875,000.
Torres notes that such an outcome is unusual, particularly given the hurdles her client faced. “Most of my cases involve Spanish-speaking clients,” she explains. “It’s difficult for them to get medical providers or negotiate the system. It’s very unusual for someone who is typically disenfranchised to obtain this kind of result.”
